Delhi-NCR Sees Relief from Heatwave as Rain and Thunderstorms Arrive

Delhi-NCR experienced cooler temperatures and relief from heatwave conditions following a second consecutive night of rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. The IMD issued a red alert, warning of severe weather including intense thunderstorms and winds up to 80 kmph. Light to moderate rainfall is expected to continue, keeping temperatures below normal.

Residents across Delhi-NCR woke up to cooler temperatures on Saturday after a second consecutive night of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds swept through the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi and adjoining areas, warning of severe weather conditions, including intense thunderstorms, lightning and powerful winds reaching speeds of 60-70 kmph, with gusts potentially touching 80 kmph in some locations.

The weather department has advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees, and stay away from electric poles, waterlogged roads and other vulnerable areas. Authorities have also cautioned that adverse weather conditions could disrupt road traffic and daily commuting.

Rainfall Brings Relief from Heatwave Conditions

According to the IMD, Delhi and its neighbouring NCR cities are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall throughout the day, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning activity. While most areas are expected to receive light showers, isolated pockets could witness moderate rainfall and stronger storm activity.

The rainfall has significantly reduced temperatures across the national capital. Delhi recorded its coolest day of June so far on Friday, ending a prolonged spell of intense summer heat. At Safdarjung, the city's primary weather station, the maximum temperature settled at 34.6°C, which was 5.3°C below normal, while the minimum temperature dropped to 22.8°C, nearly 5.2°C below the seasonal average.

For Saturday, the IMD has forecast a maximum temperature of around 37°C and a minimum temperature near 23°C.

Strong Winds, Hailstorms Possible Across NCR

The weather system is not limited to Delhi alone. Several parts of the National Capital Region and nearby states are expected to experience strong winds ranging between 60 and 80 kmph. The IMD has also warned that isolated areas could witness hailstorm activity, adding to the severity of the ongoing weather disturbance.

The department's forecast indicates periods of very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph during the day and evening hours.

Delhi-NCR Weather Forecast for the Next Four Days

Weather conditions are expected to remain unstable across Delhi-NCR over the coming days. The IMD predicts generally cloudy skies, intermittent rain spells and thunderstorms from June 14 to June 16. Strong winds are also likely during this period.

Meteorologists say the continued rainfall activity could keep temperatures 2°C to 4°C below normal, providing much-needed relief from the scorching summer conditions that dominated the region during May and early June.

Officials have urged residents to stay updated with weather advisories and follow safety instructions, especially during periods of lightning and high winds.
