New Delhi: Over 2,500 people with criminal backgrounds have been identified through the Facial Recognition System (FRS) deployed around the protest site at Jantar Mantar, police sources said on Friday. The surveillance system is meant to identify wanted criminals, absconders, history-sheeters, and "Bad Characters" (BCs) who may infiltrate the protest. Four FRS units, linked to the Delhi Police database, are monitoring in real-time, instantly verifying identities of wanted individuals. "The technology has identified over 2,500 persons with criminal antecedents, acting as a deterrent and allowing close watch on potential troublemakers," a police source said. The FRS comprises high-resolution cameras capturing facial images from a distance, matching them with the Delhi Police database within seconds. If a wanted individual is detected, the concerned unit is alerted for immediate action. Police stated the technology also identifies habitual offenders listed as "Bad Characters." "The deployment serves preventive and investigative purposes, detecting anti-social elements early without inconveniencing ordinary protesters," said an officer. Delhi Police has previously deployed FRS during Republic Day, Independence Day, and other major events as part of security arrangements.
