A London-returned IT professional filed a case against her husband and his family in Medipally, Hyderabad, alleging dowry harassment, assault, and threats. This follows an earlier domestic violence case registered against the same individuals. The complainant claims significant dowry was given at the time of marriage, and later discovered her husband's financial claims were false and that he had incurred substantial debt.
The Medipally police, on Saturday, filed a case of dowry harassment and assault against a Uppal resident and his family members after a London-returned IT professional accused them of allegedly harassing, intimidating, and attacking her for additional dowry.
“There is already a domestic violence case pending against them based on the woman’s earlier complaint. We have now registered another case under Sections 85 (dowry harassment), 118 (assault), 79 (insult the modesty of a woman), 352 (intentional insults) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the BNS and and started an investigation,” said Ch Shankaraiah, circle inspector, Medipally.
According to police, the complainant, a resident of Rampally, had returned from London in late 2024 after reconnecting with her former school classmate through social media, while she was working abroad. The two are said to have got married in 2025 in the presence of both families.
Police said the woman alleged that her family had given 40 tolas of gold and a plot worth nearly ₹1 crore to the groom’s family as dowry at the time of marriage.
“Within months of the marriage, the complainant allegedly realised that her husband’s claims about having a well-paying job and flourishing real estate and finance businesses were false,” the complainant alleged.
She told the police that her husband had borrowed over Rs 1 crore from her friends and acquaintances without her knowledge and was under severe debt.
Frequent disputes allegedly broke out over the issue, following which her husband and in-laws allegedly began demanding additional dowry from her family.
In her complaint, the woman further claimed that her father-in-law threatened to “sell” her to clear the debts, while her husband and in-laws accused her of having an extramarital relationship and questioned the paternity of the child when she was pregnant.
She also alleged that her in-laws outraged her modesty during repeated confrontations at home.
“Despite a domestic violence case being registered earlier, the accused failed to appear for counselling sessions,” a police official said, adding that the complainant has also alleged that she and her family members were recently threatened and assaulted by her husband and inlaws which led to her hospitalisation.
