A West Australian father is fighting for his life after an assault, with police investigating whether an argument over hooning was behind the incident in Geraldton.
Officers were called to the Geraldton suburb of Deepdale at 9:40pm on Friday after reports of an altercation.
Police allege a 22-year-old man assaulted father-of-three Brodie Stokes.
Mr Stokes, 43, sustained serious injuries and was flown to Royal Perth Hospital, where he had surgery to relieve bleeding on the brain.
He remains in a critical condition.
Detectives said they were looking into whether the altercation was linked to Mr Stokes confronting people hooning outside his home, where he lives with his wife and three children aged between eight months and nine years.
The 22-year-old accused has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm and remains in custody.
He will appear in the Geraldton Magistrates Court on June 18.
In a written statement, Mr Stokes's wife Bonnie said her husband's condition remained serious.
"[He] is in a very serious critical condition still. Doctors cannot give us any more information at this time unfortunately," Ms Stokes said.
"The family would like to thank everyone for the love and support we have received the past few days."
