FPT University launches high-achiever Computer Science program

The university is implementing a Computer Science major under the "Talented Bachelor" model, targeting students with outstanding abilities in technological thinking, creativity, and research. Instead of mass training, the program focuses on selecting learners with potential for development in key technology fields, thereby building a selective learning environment that encourages deep thinking and the capacity to create new technologies.

One of the program's objectives is to meet Vietnam's growing demand for human resources who understand technology from its roots, can design systems, and create new technologies. In its Future of Jobs Report 2025, the World Economic Forum (WEF) also ranks Computer Science among the top 5 fastest-growing fields globally.

The program includes two specializations: Artificial Intelligence and Data Science; Cybersecurity and Digital Safety. Accordingly, the university aims for in-depth training rather than broad coverage of many topics. Students gain early access to specialized fields where businesses have a demand for engineers capable of solving real-world technological problems, in addition to their ability to use tools.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Science

For the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science specialization, FPT University builds its training content by referencing and comparing core and specialized modules from many international universities such as Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), National University of Singapore (NUS), Harvard University, and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

The program guides students to approach technologies widely applied in AI and data fields such as Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Generative AI, Reinforcement Learning, Quantum Computing, and MLOps.

Instead of focusing on theory, the program dedicates about 70-80% of its time to practical activities. Students learn through projects, work in GPU lab systems, and access cloud computing platforms from Google, Nvidia, and AWS.

Modules are designed according to the practical skills and competencies required in the AI field for research and industry. Students perform lab exercises, recreate new research, develop projects to solve business problems, participate in Kaggle competitions, international hackathons, or experience career simulation models like AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, and Research Scientist.

Cybersecurity and Digital Safety

Amidst the strong digital transformation, the demand for information security is increasing. Cybersecurity now requires the ability to analyze systems, identify risks, and understand new technological exploitation methods, including AI.

Therefore, FPT University has built the Cybersecurity and Digital Safety specialization based on the NICE (National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education) framework, an international reference standard developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This equips students with knowledge ranging from fundamentals like cryptography, operating systems, computer networks, and software architecture to specialized fields such as cloud computing security, AI applications in cyber defense and attack, AI system security, and data analysis for digital forensics.

The program allocates a large proportion to practical activities through labs, group projects, CTFs, mini-projects, and simulated business environments. This approach helps learners hone problem-solving skills while developing self-learning, research, and adaptation capabilities to technological changes in the AI era. Through the training process, young people gradually form a comprehensive perspective on the relationship between technology, data, and system security in the digital environment.

As English is used as the medium of instruction throughout the learning process, foreign language proficiency is a key entry requirement for students. Learners must achieve an English level equivalent to Level 4 according to the 6-level Foreign Language Competency Framework for Vietnam (equivalent to IELTS 6.0).

For students who do not meet the requirement, the university implements a foundation phase lasting from two months to one year to strengthen English proficiency before entering specialized modules.

In addition to English, students also learn Japanese as a second foreign language. FPT University hopes that equipping students with multiple languages will broaden their integration capabilities, increase opportunities to access the international labor market, and adapt to multicultural work environments.

Upon graduation from the Computer Science major, students can take on positions such as AI Engineer, Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Cybersecurity Engineer, or System Security Specialist in technology companies or financial organizations. Learners can also pursue research or teaching careers in the technology field.
