Google Releases Design Specs for Custom Fitbit Air Bands

Google has released design recommendations and 2D CAD drawings for custom bands for its new Fitbit Air fitness tracker, aiming to foster an ecosystem of third-party accessories.

Fitbit Air is designed with a lightweight core sensor unit that can be completely detached, allowing for a wide variety of third-party bands and an ecosystem built in collaboration with creators and brands worldwide.

Google expects users to "freely build their own unique bands and housing solutions that match any style and occasion" by leveraging the device's characteristics.

The recommendations were released to ensure that custom bands do not impair the device's functionality or cause health issues for users. For example, to ensure accurate measurement of heart rate and SpO2 (blood oxygen wellness), it is recommended that the design maintain a sustained contact pressure of at least 35mmHg (0.68psi) against the skin.

For manufacturers and individuals looking to sell custom bands, Google has also explained how to join the "Made for Google" certified accessory program, which allows them to obtain an official badge. By involving partners who develop excellent bands, Google aims to make the Fitbit ecosystem itself more attractive.
