India Braces for Significant Weather Shift with Monsoon Activity

Monsoon 2026: India is set for a significant weather shift as rain-bearing systems become active across the country on June 11 and 12. Expect rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, and dust storms, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures to North, East, Central, and South India. Several regions, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala, are bracing for intense weather activity.

After days of intense summer heat in many parts of the country, weather conditions are set to change as rain-bearing systems become active across several regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), June 11 and June 12 are likely to bring rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, dust storms and a noticeable drop in temperatures across parts of North, East, Central and South India.

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and several northeastern states are among the regions expected to witness significant weather activity.

Delhi to See Rain, Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

Residents of Delhi may finally get some relief from the scorching heat. The IMD has issued an orange alert for rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lighting and gusty winds on Thursday for the national capital, followed by gradual fall in temperature by 3-5 degrees Celsius.

For June 11, the IMD has forecast a partly cloudy sky that is expected to turn generally cloudy by afternoon. Light rain or very light rain is likely during the evening or night, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms and strong winds reaching 50-60 kmph, with gusts up to 70 kmph.

Maximum temperatures are expected to remain between 40°C and 42°C, while minimum temperatures could stay between 27°C and 29°C.

On June 12, weather conditions are expected to become more active. The national capital is likely to experience a generally cloudy sky with two spells of light rain or very light rain. Thunderstorms, lightning and winds gusting up to 60 kmph are also expected.

The biggest relief may come in the form of cooler temperatures. Maximum temperatures are likely to drop sharply to 34°C-36°C, several degrees below normal for this time of year.

Uttar Pradesh Under Rain, Dust Storm and Thundersquall Alert

Both eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to witness scattered rainfall during the forecast period.

On June 11, the state could experience thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph and gusting up to 80 kmph. Dust storm activity is also likely across parts of the state.

The IMD has additionally warned of isolated hailstorm activity in some areas, particularly in western Uttar Pradesh. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected to continue on June 12 and June 13.

The changing weather pattern could provide temporary relief from the heat that affected several districts earlier this week.

Heavy Rainfall Warning for Kerala

Kerala remains one of the wettest regions in the country as monsoon activity continues. The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala and Mahe on June 11 and June 12. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely during this period, raising concerns about waterlogging and localized flooding in vulnerable areas.

Strong surface winds are also expected over Kerala and nearby coastal regions through June 12. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to stay alert as rainfall intensity may increase in some districts.

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh Likely to Receive Rain

Northern hill states are also expected to witness a wet spell. Uttarakhand is likely to receive widespread rainfall on June 11 and June 12, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Thundersqualls with wind speeds of up to 70 kmph are also possible.

Himachal Pradesh is forecast to receive widespread rainfall from June 11 to June 13. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may affect several districts during the period.

East India Braces for Heavy Rain

Several eastern states are likely to witness intense weather activity over the next two days.

Bihar may receive heavy rainfall between June 10 and June 13.

Odisha is likely to see heavy rainfall on June 11 and June 12.

Jharkhand could experience heavy rain on June 12 and June 13.

Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are expected to receive widespread rain, with heavy to very heavy showers in some areas.

Thunderstorms and strong winds are also forecast across many eastern states.

Northeast India to Continue Receiving Heavy Showers

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura through June 16.

Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura may continue to receive heavy showers over the next few days.

Rainfall Continues Across Southern and Western India

Apart from Kerala, widespread rainfall is expected over Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Heavy rainfall is also likely in:

Coastal Karnataka

Tamil Nadu

Telangana

Coastal Andhra Pradesh

North and South Interior Karnataka

Meanwhile, isolated rainfall is forecast across Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada. Konkan and Goa could receive heavy rainfall during this period.

Temperatures Likely to Fall Across North India

The IMD has indicated that maximum temperatures across northwest India are likely to fall by 3°C to 5°C between June 11 and June 13 as rain-bearing systems become more active.

This means regions including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand could see a welcome break from the recent heatwave conditions. People in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather updates, especially where strong winds, hailstorms, heavy rain or thundersqualls have been forecast.
