Iran and the US are engaged in peace treaty negotiations following a period of conflict. While progress has been made on many points, final agreement remains elusive.
TEHRAN, May 25. /TASS/. Iran and the US are still far from signing a final peace treaty, but at the same time, the parties have reached agreement on most issues, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.
"It is true that agreement has been reached on most of the issues under discussion, but no one can argue that this means a ceasefire will be signed soon," the Tasnim news agency quoted him as saying. According to Baghaei, frequent changes in the US position are complicating the negotiation process.
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran. On April 7, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week mutual ceasefire with the Islamic Republic. On April 11, Tehran and Washington held talks in Islamabad but failed to reach an agreement on a long-term resolution to the conflict. On April 21, the US leader announced his intention to extend the ceasefire with Iran. On May 19, Trump stated that US was ready to give diplomacy a chance in the conflict over Iran until the beginning of the following week, postponing the resumption of hostilities until then. On May 23, the US leader noted that the draft of the future agreement with Iran had been largely agreed upon, but the next day he reported that the parties had not yet reached final decisions on some issues.
