少子化の進展や産業構造の変化などにより農業や人工知能（AI）に関わる人材の不足が見込まれる中、高専の数を増やすとともに教育の質を高め、国内外で活躍する技術者らを育成する必要があると判断した。
文科省によると、高専は2025年5月時点で全国に58校あり、本科には約5万3000人が在籍している。このうち国立が51校と大半を占めているが、高専を自治体や学校法人が新設する場合の支援策や、農業やコンテンツなどの領域での学科設置の促進方法、実務家を含む教員の確保策なども議論する。
本科を卒業した場合に現在得られる「準学士」という称号については、国際的に評価が共通している「学位」と位置づける方法について検討する。
松本洋平文科相は12日の閣議後記者会見で「高専は高度な技術者や専門人材を育成する教育機関として社会からの期待が高まっている。複数の観点から、高専の高度化に向けた取り組みを総合的に検討・実施していきたい」と述べた。【斎藤文太郎】
