SEOUL, June 1 (Yonhap) -- Kia Corp. said Monday its global sales rose in May from a year earlier, supported by robust demand for its Sportage compact SUVs.
The company sold a total of 277,715 units globally last month, up 2.7 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to the South Korean automaker.
Kia Sportage SUVs supported the growth, with 52,293 units sold during the one-month period. This was followed by Seltos SUVs with 29,208 units and its mid-sized crossover SUV Sorento with 21,488 units.
A total of 44,713 units of Kia vehicles were sold domestically, down 0.6 percent from the previous year.
Sales outside of South Korea rose 3.4 percent on-year to 232,781 units, the company said.
Kia said strong demand for its hybrid SUV lineup in the United States and its commercial electric vehicle lineup in Europe helped drive vehicle sales, extending year-on-year growth to a third consecutive month.
