KKR back Varun Chakaravarthy to play a key role against LSG on spin-friendly surface

Ahead of the Kolkata Knight Riders-Lucknow Super Giants match, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane said his side wanted to bat first to give the batting unit the freedom to express itself. He said the immediate priority was to assess how the team was functioning as a unit and added that the bowling group had come together well in recent games.

Rahane confirmed that KKR were unchanged. He described the week-long break as much-needed and said the win before the break had been important for morale. He added that the last two to three days had been spent together as a group, reflecting on the first seven matches, identifying what had gone right and where improvements were needed. He also said practice sessions had gone well and that he was looking forward to the game.

Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant said his team wanted to see what the target was and find answers as a batting group. He confirmed one change, with George Linde coming in for Manimaran Siddharth.

On leading a side with several experienced players, Pant said the challenge was to find a way to win together when there were many leaders in the group. He said the team was getting close to that and stressed the need to stay together and turn things around. He added that he was confident it would happen.

A key matchup in the contest could be between Varun Chakaravarthy and Aiden Markram. Chakaravarthy has dismissed Markram six times in 13 T20 innings, giving the spinner a clear edge in that battle.

Markram, despite his reputation against spin, has struggled to read Chakaravarthy's variations. The spinner's control and changes of pace have often forced errors, particularly in the middle overs.

With conditions expected to assist spin, that contest could become more significant. An early meeting between the two could give KKR a useful advantage.

KKR have also been encouraged by Chakaravarthy's return to form. After a quiet start to the season, he has regained rhythm and control. His record against key LSG batters, including Pant and Markram, makes him an important option on a surface expected to help spin.
