لماذا يهم

A new Economist/YouGov poll shows a majority of Americans describe former President Donald Trump as "dangerous" and his net approval rating is negative 24 percent. This comes amidst controversies like the Jeffrey Epstein files release and an unpopular war with Iran.

حجم الخط

A majority of Americans say they would describe President Donald Trump as “dangerous”, according to a new poll.

Trump is about a year and a half into his second term, and his approval rating continues to plummet. His administration has been mired by the Jeffrey Epstein files release, protests against its aggressive immigration crackdown and an unpopular and costly war with Iran.

When asked in a new Economist/YouGov poll which word they’d use to describe the president, 52 percent of Americans said dangerous. Forty-nine percent used “corrupt,” and 45 percent used “racist” and “out-of-touch” to describe Trump.

But there were also 45 percent of Americans who used the word “honest,” 40 percent who used the word “inspiring,” and 38 percent who used the word “intelligent” to describe Trump.

Generally, it was Republicans who used favorable words and Democrats who used unfavorable words to describe Trump.

Trump’s net approval rating in the latest poll sat at negative 24 percent, lower than the same point in both his first term and his Democratic rival Joe Biden’s term.

Fifty-four percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of immigration, while just 39 percent approve, according to the new poll. Fifty-four percent of respondents also disapproved of Trump’s handling of race relations, while 32 percent approved.

Trump fared better on crime, but 49 percent still disapproved of his handling of the matter while 41 percent approved.

When Trump urged the Senate to confirm Todd Blanche as US attorney general last week, he wrote on Truth Social, “Under Todd’s incredible leadership at DOJ, Murder is down to the LOWEST level since 1900, and we just saw the biggest one year drop in RECORDED HISTORY.”

Poor public opinion of Trump can hinder other Republicans’ campaigns in the November midterm elections. And it doesn’t help that, historically, the party in the White House ends up losing seats in Congress halfway through the presidency.

But CNN Chief Data Analyst Harry Enten noted Monday that while Democrats have an average four-point lead on a generic House ballot in recent polling from The Washington Post and CNBC, it’s a slimmer margin than past midterm election cycles.

“Yes, they’re ahead, but they’re ahead...by only four points, which is significantly less than what we saw in 2018 and 2006, when Democrats took back the House,” Enten said, calling the numbers a “warning sign.”

أسئلة مفتوحة

  • How will Trump's low approval specifically affect individual Republican campaigns?
  • What specific actions will Trump take regarding his public image?
  • Will the generic House ballot margin widen or narrow closer to the election?
