Rumour mill surrounding New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal is heating up, and the Toronto Maple Leafs may have an interesting opportunity this offseason. The Islanders have been included in reports as a team that could look to create some salary cap flexibility, with several scenarios in play. A few reports are linking the Islanders to possible roster changes as the organization looks at its long-term plans. But there’s been no indication that Barzal has been made officially available. The 28-year-old remains one of the most productive players in New York. His speed, playmaking and versatility have made him a cornerstone of the franchise since entering the NHL. Barzal finished the 2025-26 season with 19 goals and 72 points in 81 games. Once again proving he’s among the league’s top offensive contributors, and those numbers would make him an attractive option for teams looking for another top-end forward. For the Toronto Maple Leafs, adding Barzal could give them some much-needed depth behind Auston Matthews and more flexibility throughout the lineup. He would give Toronto another dynamic offensive option as the organization continues to chase Stanley Cup contention. Any agreement would be expensive. The New York Islanders would likely want a big package of high draft picks, top prospects and maybe some NHL-ready talent.
