A state school in south-west Queensland has been closed today and several homes have been evacuated as authorities investigate a mercury exposure incident.

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) was called to the Cunnamulla State School yesterday, 800 kilometres west of Brisbane, after it was suspected students had brought in two containers containing liquid mercury.

Several children were taken to hospital as a precaution.

Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal and exposure through skin contact, inhaling fumes or ingestion can lead to damage to the brain, kidneys and nervous system.

The Queensland Department of Education said school staff acted immediately to remove the substance from the students and contacted council and health authorities.

The Darling Downs Public Health Unit sent communications to the school and families advising anyone who has been exposed to the substance to present to the local emergency department.

A QFD spokesperson said a scientific crew was investigating and specialist equipment was on the way from Brisbane to ascertain the level of contamination.

The Cunnamulla State School, BP, council depot and several private residences have been isolated.

The spokesperson says the incident is under control and people should avoid those areas.

The Queensland Department of Education said it would continue to follow advice from Queensland Health, including preventing access to the affected area.
