Millions of older Americans are set to gain access to obesity drugs through Medicare’s new Bridge program starting Wednesday, but a significant lack of awareness among the eligible population may hinder immediate uptake.

A recent survey found 82% of older Americans, across party lines, were unaware of the impending coverage. This lack of awareness persists despite the program’s significance, marking the first time Medicare will cover obesity medications like those from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has focused outreach on healthcare providers and pharmacists rather than broad public advertising, citing the effectiveness of promoting benefits once they are available. However, experts warn this strategy may delay patient engagement, as eligibility requires specific steps including prior authorization.

Pharmaceutical companies Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have undertaken targeted promotions, but no linear TV ads have been used to inform the general public. Instead, they rely on providers and pharmacies to inform patients, drawing parallels to how annual flu vaccines are promoted.

Challenges ahead include ensuring the program’s infrastructure can handle demand and educating beneficiaries about the complex enrollment process.
