PR Sreejesh Escalates Dispute with Hockey India Over Coaching Role

PR Sreejesh, Indian hockey legend, has publicly disputed Hockey India's decision not to renew his contract as junior men's team coach. Sreejesh questioned the lack of clarity on the development team structure and the increasing reliance on foreign coaches. Hockey India defended its decision, stating Sreejesh's contract expired and he was offered a different role, which he declined. The federation recently appointed Frederic Soyez as the new junior men's coach. Sreejesh's public statement highlighted the lack of answers to his questions about the development team, including its existence, player roster, program structure, approved camps, and targeted tournaments. He also criticized the setup of four teams with six foreign coaches, three foreign strength and conditioning coaches, one foreign video analyst, two visiting foreign goalkeeper coaches, and one visiting foreign sports psychologist, noting only one Indian coach per team remained. Sreejesh suggested that even under-18 teams might soon rely on foreign coaches, questioning if Indian coaches like Sardar Singh and Rani Rampal were deemed insufficiently experienced. Hockey India denied bias, emphasizing a standard application process. The dispute has become a high-profile challenge to the federation's coaching strategies, emphasizing the lack of opportunities for Indian coaches.
