Qatar PM Greets Pakistan PM, Appears to Ignore US VP Vance in Viral Video

A video from the latest US-Iran talks in Switzerland has gone viral on social media. The footage appears to show Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani greeting Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while not acknowledging US Vice President JD Vance. The clip sparked online claims that Vance was 'humiliated' and that Qatar was 'refusing to greet him'.

The footage emerged from a quadrilateral meeting involving the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar at the Burgenstock resort overlooking Lake Lucerne on Sunday, where diplomats gathered for discussions aimed at advancing a framework to end the ongoing Middle East conflict. The clip circulated widely on X, with users portraying the interaction as a diplomatic snub. However, no government involved in the talks has publicly characterised the moment as such.

The meeting came as the Trump administration sought to sustain diplomatic engagement with Tehran following days of heightened regional tensions. Speaking during the talks, Vance said US President Donald Trump still saw an opportunity to 'turn over a new leaf' with Iran if Tehran complied with the terms of the evolving framework agreement. Qatar has emerged as a key intermediary in the negotiations. Earlier, Doha said it was 'cautiously optimistic' about the framework agreement and described it as a first step rather than a final settlement.

According to reports from the meeting, no joint photo opportunity was arranged involving all sides. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefly entered the room and hugged Sharif before VP Vance delivered remarks. Vance was positioned toward the rear of the room, and Araghchi did not engage with him.

Developments continued after the first round of talks concluded. In a post on X on Monday, Araghchi said, "Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end the Lebanon War." He added that the mediators had "delivered major progress". Pakistan, Qatar and Iran have all acknowledged the conclusion of the first round of high-level discussions.
