SEOUL, April 30 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., an electronic components affiliate of Samsung Electronics Co., said Thursday its first-quarter net income rose nearly 80 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong demand for products used in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. Net profit for the January-March period came to 252.7 billion won (US$170 million), up a sharp 78.4 percent from 141.6 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory filing. Its operating profit also rose 39.9 percent on-year to 280.6 billion won, and revenue increased 17.2 percent to 3.2 trillion won. The earnings exceeded market expectations. The average estimate of net profit by analysts stood at 203.4 billion won, according to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency. Samsung Electro-Mechanics attributed the strong quarterly earnings to robust sales of its premium product lineup, including automotive multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for AI applications and chip packaging solutions for servers. The company said global investment in AI infrastructure is expected to continue in the second quarter, supporting solid demand for higher-value components for AI servers, such as MLCCs.
