SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- SK Group said Friday it has partnered with a Vietnamese provincial government and a national innovation center to help foster an artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in Vietnam and support the country's future growth strategy.
During a business forum held on the sidelines of the South Korea-Vietnam summit talks in Hanoi on Thursday, SK Innovation Co. and SK Telecom Co. signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with the north-central province of Nghe An and the National Innovation Center (NIC), respectively, according to SK Group.
The company said it expects the collaboration to lay the groundwork for the first overseas expansion of its full-stack AI model, which spans the construction of AI data centers and stable power supplies, as well as the development and validation of AI models and the rollout of industry-specific AI services.
Under the MOU with Nghe An Province, SK Innovation, SK Telecom and the provincial government will jointly explore the construction of an AI data center and related infrastructure projects in the region. Nghe An Province is considered a key growth region in Vietnam, with manufacturing, energy and high-tech industries clustered around major port and logistics infrastructure.
Under a separate MOU with Vietnam's NIC, the companies agreed to cooperate in areas such as building AI data centers, developing energy infrastructure and establishing policy and institutional frameworks to foster the AI industry. Founded in 2019, the NIC is at the center of Vietnam's innovation-led growth strategy.
"AI will play a pivotal role in Vietnam's sustained growth," said Chey Tae-won during a business roundtable held ahead of the forum. "SK will make a substantial contribution to the development of Vietnam's AI industry by leveraging our portfolio capabilities across the entire AI ecosystem, ranging from energy and semiconductors to AI models and application services."
