India's T20 captaincy could soon be up for discussion as Suryakumar Yadav continues to struggle with the bat. With India's upcoming T20I series against Ireland fast approaching, fresh speculation has emerged over whether the experienced batter will continue to lead the side.

According to PTI, a senior BCCI source indicated that Suryakumar's position as India's T20 captain is under review, with Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma reportedly emerging as potential candidates for the role.

Suryakumar Yadav Endures Another Disappointing Outing

The latest setback came during the opening match of Season 4 of the T20 Mumbai League at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Leading Triumph Knights, Suryakumar looked promising early in his innings but was dismissed for 19 runs from just 11 deliveries. He shared a 37-run partnership with youngster Nutan Goel before being caught at deep square leg off spinner Rahul Sawant.

Despite Goel's impressive 93 from 56 balls, Triumph Knights fell short in their chase of 189 and were restricted to 188 for eight, losing by 21 runs to North Mumbai Panthers.

T20 World Cup Success Could Not Hide Batting Struggles

Although India successfully defended their T20 World Cup title earlier this year under Suryakumar's captaincy, his personal performances with the bat failed to match the team's achievements.

The 35-year-old managed 242 runs in nine matches during the tournament, averaging 30.25. His highest score was an unbeaten 84 against the USA in Mumbai, but he struggled to produce consistent match-winning knocks throughout the competition.

While the trophy lifted pressure at the time, questions surrounding his batting form have continued to grow.

IPL 2026 Campaign Added To Concerns

Suryakumar's difficulties extended into IPL 2026.

Representing the Mumbai Indians, he scored just 260 runs in 13 matches at an average of 20.76. Although he maintained a strike rate of 147.54, he registered only two half-centuries during the season.

Mumbai Indians were eliminated during the league stage, and Suryakumar's lack of big scores became one of the talking points of their disappointing campaign.

Shreyas Iyer And Tilak Varma In The Frame

According to PTI, selectors are considering alternative leadership options should they decide to move away from Suryakumar.

Shreyas Iyer, who has previous captaincy experience at both domestic and IPL level, is reportedly among the frontrunners. Tilak Varma has also emerged as a strong contender following his impressive performances in recent seasons.

The emergence of younger leaders could influence the selectors' thinking as India begin preparations for future ICC tournaments.

Ireland Series Could Be Crucial

India are scheduled to play a two-match T20I series against Ireland later this month in Belfast.

The first match will take place on June 26, while the second T20I is scheduled for June 28.

With squad announcements expected soon, all eyes will be on whether Suryakumar retains the captaincy or if selectors opt for a change in leadership.

What Lies Ahead For Suryakumar?

There is little doubt about Suryakumar Yadav's impact on Indian T20 cricket over the years. His innovative strokeplay and leadership have made him one of the format's most influential figures.

However, cricket can be unforgiving when form deserts a player. With a string of modest scores across international and franchise cricket, pressure is mounting ahead of a busy T20 calendar.

Whether the selectors choose continuity or a fresh direction remains to be seen, but the coming weeks could prove pivotal for both Suryakumar's batting future and his role as India's T20 captain.

Lalit Modi claims Indian cricketers were reluctant to play 2007 T20 World Cup

Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi claims many star Indian cricketers were unwilling to play the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup, dismissing it as a "stupid game." Modi personally urged players during India's tour of England to participate, but they preferred to rest after a long tour. He also stated that the BCCI sent a "second team" led by MS Dhoni, as senior players like Tendulkar and Dravid opted out. Modi believes Yuvraj Singh's six sixes in an over against England significantly boosted viewership and interest in the T20 format.
