After mounting speculation, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have officially tied the knot.

As New York City sweltered through a heatwave that gave way to pouring rain, the newlyweds celebrated in the impenetrable fortress that is Madison Square Garden on the Fourth of July weekend.

That meant no paparazzi, no drones, and the highest of security.

Swift's long-time publicist, Tree Paine, released a statement to the media confirming the nuptials.

The carefully worded statement did not confirm when or where the ceremony took place, but contained the first official details of what some have dubbed America's "royal wedding".

Moments after it was announced the pair were married, billboards outside the venue lit up with the news.

It was confirmed the global superstar and NFL player were married by none other than friend and comedian Adam Sandler.

No official photos have been released yet, but it was also confirmed the pair were both dressed by Dior designer Jonathan Anderson.

There were no bridesmaids or groomsmen, either.

Instead, Swift's brother Austin Swift was her Man of Honour, while Kelce's brother Jason Kelce was the Best Man.

As expected, there were countless reactions online over the venue, officiant and even the Madison Square Garden signage.

@channellesays: It's a love story and babies just said yes! 😭

@emily_moise_wilburn: I loveeee that they did this FOR US swifties!!!! 💕💕🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼

@mselizabennett: never seen anything tackier in my life xo

@aniahammar: Adam Sandler officiating is the best thing I've ever heard

@paigeylane: People are too much. lol. This is just fun. It's corny, tacky, whatever … but it's just fun. Can't people just have fun on their wedding day?

@kyliemenish: i'm sorry. feel however you want about the wedding, but adam sandler as the officiant is iconic.

@nicoleisnik: It's like when they send out the smoke for a new Pope. 💨💨

@spacegirltina: the way I am still wondering if i am being punked

@flow3rs4vas3s: say what you want, it's genuinely sweet that she gave the fans this little thing knowing that people would be watching anyway. to me it feels like a sort of acknowledgment of the fact that they have followed her through every iteration of her love life

@katherine_kerr: Cannot imagine anything tackier than this

Lauren Rosewarne, an associate professor at the University of Melbourne, says the details that have been released — and the ones that haven't — are strategic.

"Taylor Swift is an artist who is known for her media mastery," Dr Rosewarne said.

"Part of this mastery is about ensuring people have enough content to feel like they have some access to her but not so much to ever feel fully satisfied."

Dr Rosewarne says the few details the public has at the moment are the ones Swift has chosen to release.

"The choice of Adam Sandler, for example, might appear strange on the surface to casual observers, but Swifties are aware that Sandler is a big fan of Swift and that Travis Kelce had a cameo in a recent Adam Sandler film," Dr Rosewarne says.

"Superfans — abreast of all the Swift lore — would enjoy knowing these connections and thus the Sandler choice would feel less curious and more like another Easter egg for fans.

"It's also, of course, the kind of celebrity detail that the media would clamour to report on."

No further details of the big day have been officially confirmed, but it has been reported by various US outlets that 1,000 guests were in attendance.

Multiple celebrities were seen descending on Madison Square Garden, many arriving on foot to cheering Swifties who queued up in the heat to be part of the moment.

Famous faces in attendance included Selena Gomez, Jack Antonoff, the Haim sisters, Dakota Johnson, Gigi Hadid and boyfriend Bradley Cooper, Camila Cabello, Benson Boone, Karlie Kloss and Josh Kushner and more.

Swift's longtime best friend Abigail Anderson, whose name has been written into several songs, was also seen arriving.

Hosting an event of this scale in the city centre meant a heavy police presence was involved, and multiple New York City streets had to be shut down.

Both fans and the media have labelled the union of the pop superstar and American football player the equivalent of America's "royal wedding".

"When we think of a royal wedding, we think of extravagant celebrations, celebrity guests and unrelenting media attention," Dr Rosewarne says.

Georgia Carroll, a fan culture expert who wrote her PhD on Taylor Swift, says while some critics have labelled the spectacle "tacky", it won't impact Swift's relatable persona.

"Even though she's a billionaire, even though she's arguably one of the most famous people in the world, she has never come across like she feels she's on a pedestal," Dr Carroll says.

"I definitely think that's why she is in her position and why so many people not only love her now, but have loved her for so long.

"And while on paper, Madison Square Garden, Fourth of July weekend might sound tacky, I'm sure as soon as we see the photos that word will disappear from everyone's descriptions of it."

Throughout her career, Swift has used her influence to try and change the music industry from within, most notably by re-releasing her music and boycotting streaming platforms for underpaying artists.

Now that she is in her married era, will Swift transform how the rich and famous say "I do"?

"It's hard to imagine that most people would ever be able to aspire to a Swift-style wedding extravaganza," Dr Rosewarne says.

"But undoubtedly aspects of the wedding — think dress style, make-up, music choices, decor — will be endlessly reported and thus likely will inspire at least some future couples in the same way that celebrities in the past have."

Comedian Impersonating Karl Stefanovic Says He 'Doesn't Scare Me' After Being Blocked

Comedian Henry Bretz, known for parodying Karl Stefanovic, was blocked by the former TV host on social media. Bretz, who co-hosts a radio show, started impersonating Stefanovic after the podcaster launched his show, viewing it as a dangerous blueprint similar to US trends. Stefanovic initially liked Bretz's videos but later blocked him after a parody criticizing a story about a sausage sandwich.
