South Africa's President Ramaphosa Suspends Top Policeman Over $21m Contract Scandal
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Police Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola on precautionary suspension after he was charged with violating the Public Finance Management Act. The charges relate to his alleged failure in oversight duties regarding a $21m health contract awarded in 2024, which was cancelled in May 2025 amid a criminal investigation. Masemola denies the charges and is the third South African police chief to face criminal investigation while in office.
