UK Young Adults Face Prolonged 'Kidulthood' Amid Economic Challenges

A report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies reveals 42% of 25-year-olds in Britain live with parents, up from 25% in the 1990s. Declining real earnings and housing affordability force young adults into 'kidulthood,' impacting independence and exacerbating inequality. The article calls for policy changes like social housing and stronger wages.

Sydney Property Market Cools, Offering Hope to First-Home Buyers

Sydney's property market is experiencing a cooling trend, with falling prices and more unsold homes at auctions. This shift is creating opportunities for first-home buyers like Ruban Parajuli and Arya Katel, who were previously priced out of areas like Glebe. While prices are still high, the market slowdown offers a more realistic chance for them to enter the market.

The Guardian view on the Renters’ Rights Act: finally, protections fit for the modern housing market | Editorial

The rising number of private renters in Britain have for too long put up with chronically insecure tenancy agreements and poor conditionsThe defining trend in British housing in recent decades has been towards private renting. The sector in England nearly doubled in size between 2004 and 2013. By 2023 almost two-fifths of households were either renting privately or socially. Meanwhile, the dream of home ownership has steadily eroded: 39% of 25- to 34-year-olds owned their home in 2023, 20 percentage points lower than the peak (59%) in 2000. Many younger adults now rent from a private landlord as the default, and expect to do so for the rest of their lives.Which is why the introduction of the Renters’ Rights Act is important. Until last week, landlords could evict a tenant for requesting a reasonable repair, or challenging a rent hike. A poll in 2023 for the charity Shelter found that tenants who complained to their landlord or local authority were 159% more likely to be served a no-fault eviction notice than those who did not. The fear was that complaints could cost tenants their homes. It was customary for landlords to pre-emptively evict tenants if they wanted to raise rents. Continue reading...

Hong Kong think tanks call for pension savings access to boost home ownership among young families

Two Hong Kong policy think tanks released a survey finding that younger residents aged 18-40 have a weaker desire for home ownership (5.06/10) compared to those over 40 (5.8/10). Among those not eager to buy, 46.4% cited unaffordable flat prices and 21.3% cited mortgage burden. The study calls for allowing young families to use mandatory pension savings for home purchases, offering housing loans to first-time buyers, and halving down payment requirements for middle-income buyers of government-subsidised flats.
