鵜匠が手縄（たなわ）でつないだ6羽の鵜を巧みに操り、水中に潜った鵜がアユ捕らえて水面に顔を出すと、遊覧船の招待客約60人から歓声が上がった。
錦川の鵜飼いは、錦帯橋を創建した江戸時代の岩国領主、吉川広嘉の奥方が錦帯橋で見物した記録が残る。1952年からは観光鵜飼いとして、錦川のアユ漁解禁に合わせて開かれている。
鵜匠の久貞乾さん（57）は「古式にのっとった鵜匠の手縄さばき、錦川を見下ろす岩国城、川に架かる錦帯橋が織りなす時代絵巻を楽しんでほしい」と話していた。
