23' Another promising raid forward for Spain

H

By Henry Hanson

Marcos Llorente and Lamine Yamal are linking up beautifully on the right, and Llorente finds room to work in a flat, early cross.

Mikel Merino is waiting in the middle, but is unable to control the ball and the chance is gone.

And that's quarter time in Guadalajara.

22' First chance for Cabo Verde

D

By David Hirst

Good attacking move.

Willy Semedo gets into the box.

He shoots at the near post.

Was never going to go in but keeper almost made a mess of it, pushing the ball out for a corner.

21' Spain pressing high

H

By Henry Hanson

La Roja is pressing high up the field, and Lamine Yamal wins the ball back and drives into the penalty area.

He gets close to byline and attempts a cut back, but there are enough Uruguayan bodies back to get the ball away.

This Spanish press has been very impressive so far today.

18' Goal-bound shot blocked by Cabo Verde

D

By David Hirst

First chance of the match.

Salem Al-Dawsari gets a shot away from inside the box.

The Cabo Verde defender does really well to block.

Looked like it was going in the bottom corner.

12' Uruguay caught offside

H

By Henry Hanson

Spain turns the ball over in midfield and Uruguay has a chance to break.

The Spanish defence is holding quite a high line, and the ball just takes a little too long to be played through.

Darwin Nunez is caught offside.

Vozinha's mum in the crowd

D

By David Hirst

The camera pans to the mum of Cabo Verde keeper Vozinha in the crowd.

The 40-year-old keeper has become a social media sensation, amassing more than 17 million Instagram followers during the World Cup.

His mum missed the first game because of visa issues but she's in the crowd today.

6' Nervy moments for Spanish shot stopper

H

By Henry Hanson

Spain's Mikel Merino brings down Rodrigo Bentancur and Uruguay has an opportunity from the dead ball.

The ball into the box is high and floated, with Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon attempting to claim the ball but not gathering cleanly.

For a moment, the ball is bobbling around the penalty area, before being cleared by the Spanish defence.

3' Early yellow card for Saudi Arabia

D

By David Hirst

Reckless early challenge from Saud Abdulhamid.

Picks up a booking.

Saudi Arabia has started the game with intensity.

2' Early opening for Spain

H

By Henry Hanson

Uruguay's Rodrigo Bentancur has his pocket picked by Lamine Yamal, and the Spanish teenager is gliding towards the penalty area.

His pass finds Mikel Oyarzabal on the left, whose cutback takes a big deflection and rolls into the side netting.

And we're off in Guadalajara!

H

By Henry Hanson

Both teams are playing in their change kits today, with Uruguay in dark blue and Spain in all white.

Uruguay begins the game pushing high up the field.

Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia kick off in Houston

Both teams need to win.

The players enter the arena

H

By Henry Hanson

Spain and Uruguay have entered the arena in Guadalajara, and are lined up for the national anthems.

The Himno Nacional del Uruguay is one of my favourite national anthems and is the first to play from the stadium speakers. It features a long, bright introduction before a couple verses sang with considerable gusto.

Then, the Spanish players look on as Marcha Real, one of only three anthems not to feature any lyrics, moves us closer to kick-off.

There is a minute's silence for the victims of the earthquake in Venezuela.

Reported mutiny in Uruguay camp

H

By Henry Hanson

According to reports in South American media, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa is facing a "rebellion" from some of his biggest players.

Sergio Rochet, Manuel Ugarte, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Federico Valverde told Bielsa they wanted the team to play in a low block against European champion Spain and that they disagreed with the way he had conducted training sessions.

Bielsa reportedly responded by speaking to the squad for almost an hour.

And from what his team lineup suggests, Uruguay will not be backing down against Spain.

They look to be playing a 4-3-3 and going man for man.

Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia out for national anthems

Cabo Verde lights up World Cup

D

By David Hirst

Cabo Verde has been a highlight of the World Cup.

They started with a stunning 0-0 draw with Spain before holding Uruguay 2-2.

Whatever happens today, their fans are going to party.

All to play for in Group H

D

By David Hirst

All four teams in Group H still have a chance of qualifying to the knockout phase.

Spain leads the group on four points.

Uruguay and Cabo Verde both have two points.

Even Saudi Arabia, bottom of the table with one point, can still qualify.

Should be a thrilling pair of games.

Team news: Cabo Verde vs Saudi Arabia in Houston

D

By David Hirst

Cabo Verde

There are five changes to the Cabo Verde side who drew with Uruguay last time out.

Wagner Pina, Paulo, Deroy Duarte, Willy Semedo and Dailon Livramento come into the starting line-up.

Saudi Arabia

Nawaf Bu Washl, Sultan Mandash, and Mohamed Kanno come in for Ali Lajami, Musab Al Juwayr, and Moteb Al Harbi who all drop to the bench.

Uruguay

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez returns to the team in the only change for Uruguay.

Spain

Marcos Llorente returns at right-back, while Mikel Merino makes his first start of the tournament.

Pedro Porro and Dani Olmo drop to the bench.

Offene Fragen

  • Will Uruguay's reported player mutiny affect their performance?
  • Can Cabo Verde continue their surprising World Cup run?
  • Will Saudi Arabia secure a qualification spot?

The End of Bazball: A Complex Legacy for Brendon McCullum and England

Brendon McCullum's "Bazball" era with the England Test team concludes, leaving a mixed legacy of exhilarating highs and painful lows. Appointed in May 2022 amidst a historic slump, McCullum's aggressive approach initially revitalized the team, leading to remarkable wins. However, the experiment devolved into recklessness, culminating in significant defeats and off-field discipline issues, particularly during the Ashes.
