Ladakh was carved out as a separate Union Territory in 2019 after the revocation of Article 370. Since then, local political groups have been demanding Sixth Schedule status (which provides special administrative protections) and full statehood. Dialogue between Ladakhi groups and the Centre has continued since 2023 under a high-powered committee led by the home ministry.
Srinagar: Ladakh's two main political groupings sought a meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah during his two-day visit to press demands, including Sixth Schedule status and statehood. Shah will attend events tied to Buddha Purnima during his stay in Leh on April 30 and May 1. Leh Apex Body (LAB) co-chairman Tsering Dorje Lakrook said Ladakhi politicians and activists had unanimously decided to seek time with Shah. "Since he is coming himself, there should be a meaningful discussion in Leh on issues concerning Ladakh," Lakrook told reporters Tuesday, flanked by environment activist Sonam Wangchuk and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) co-chairman Asgar Ali Karbali. On April 26, Ladakh's lieutenant governor announced a sub-committee meeting on May 22, which LAB and KDA have called inadequate. Lakrook said Shah's visit offered a chance to convene a meeting of high-powered committee, adding May 22 talks announced by Centre were only at sub-committee level and key decisions will not be taken there. LAB and KDA have submitted a draft proposal to home ministry outlining their demands. "Now it is govt's turn to present its offer," Lakrook said. Wangchuk said holding talks during Shah's visit could help rebuild trust. "A two-hour meeting can be easily arranged during home minister's visit," he said, adding failure to engage would send a negative message. Dialogue between Ladakhi groups and Centre has continued since 2023 under a high-powered committee led by home ministry. Multiple rounds have been held, last on Feb 4, which the groups described as inconclusive.
