Three Greek Firefighters Die as Wildfires Rage Across Southern Europe

Three Greek firefighters have died tackling wildfires in Crete and the Peloponnese. Gale-force winds in Crete led to the evacuation of several villages, with two firefighters trapped and killed in Rethymno. Another died near Gytheio.

In Spain, a fourth heatwave has begun, with firefighters working to prevent flare-ups of recently controlled major wildfires. The Burgohondo fire near Madrid, spanning over 43,000 hectares, is the largest recorded in Spanish history.

Wildfires have also broken out in Turkey, Portugal, and other parts of Greece. Residents and tourists were evacuated from affected areas, with one resident describing the situation as "really scary" due to huge flames and strong winds.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned the next 12 hours are "decisive" for putting out the Madrid fire, citing higher temperatures and wind risks. Thousands have been allowed to return home in Spain, though the mayor of Chapinería highlighted severe consequences for her town, including lost homes and jobs.

A woman injured in the Almería fires earlier this month has died, bringing the death toll in those fires to fourteen, including international nationals.
