Women Disproportionately Affected as Rising Debt Burden Cuts Women's Jobs by 38 Million, UN Report Finds

UNDP report reveals women bear disproportionate burden when developing countries face rising debt costs, with 22 million women's jobs lost short-term and 38 million long-term between early 2010s and 2022. Women experience 17% income decline per capita during high debt-servicing periods while men's income remains unchanged, as cuts to education and care sectors disproportionately affect female employment.

Iran War Could Push 32 Million Into Poverty Worldwide, UNDP Warns

The United Nations Development Programme warns that the Iran war could push 32.5 million people into poverty worldwide in a worst-case scenario. The conflict has created a 'triple shock' of rising energy prices, food insecurity and slower economic growth, with developing countries bearing the heaviest burden. About half the increase would occur in 37 energy-importing nations across the Gulf, Africa, Asia and small island states. The UNDP estimates $6bn in cash transfers would be needed to protect vulnerable households.
