Underwater Medieval City Discovered in Lake Issyk-Kul Reveals Lost Silk Road Settlement

Russian Geographical Society archaeologists have discovered a large medieval settlement submerged in Lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan, near Toru Aygir village. The 13th-14th century settlement was a major Silk Road commercial hub featuring fired-brick buildings, workshops, millstones, and a large Muslim necropolis. The city was destroyed by a 15th-century earthquake that caused the shoreline to subside, submerging the settlement beneath 1-4 meters of water and silt. Anthropological studies are underway to analyze the remains.
