Donald Trump Questions England's World Cup Semifinal Tactics

US President Donald Trump has questioned England's decision to sit back after taking the lead in their World Cup semifinal loss to Argentina on Wednesday.

"You have a great player in England, who I play golf with, Harry," Trump said, referring to England striker Harry Kane, while speaking alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino in New York. "I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player."

"What do I know about soccer?" he added. "They took their best player, and they put him on defence."

After a cagey first half, Thomas Tuchel's side went in front in the 55th minute when winger Anthony Gordon turned home a Morgan Rogers' cross.

But the goal seemed to spark an almost immediate shift in momentum, as England suddenly struggled to hold the ball and invited wave after wave of pressure from Argentina.

With the Argentinians looked increasingly likely to score, Tuchel made a number of defensive substitutions and moved the team into a back five, bringing on Aston Villa centre back Ezri Konsa and Newcastle full back Dan Burn to try to shore things up.

The pressure ultimately proved too great, however, and Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández put Argentina level on 85 minutes with a strike from outside of the box.

Having found the equaliser, Lionel Scaloni's side did not relent, and they took the lead just seven minutes later when Lautaro Martínez headed home, prompting wild celebrations from both players and fans in the ground.

Tuchel has taken full responsibility for the result but said that he did not regret his in-game decisions, adding that he had trusted his "instinct" and "experience."

It was nevertheless yet another heartbreak for England and delight for Argentina, who will go on to play Spain in the World Cup final on Sunday as they look to win back-to-back titles.

England, on the other hand, face the unenviable prospect of the third-place playoff match on Saturday, where they will meet Didier Deschamps' France.

England's defensive shift has faced fierce criticism from fans and former players since the semifinal loss, with many noting that Tuchel had been brought in to move away from such negative tactics.

Former manager Gareth Southgate helped take England back among world football's elite, making two European Football Championship finals as well as the 2018 World Cup semifinals, but some felt that he did not have the killer instinct to take the team to the next level - leading to Tuchel's appointment.

The Football Association, English football's governing body, is believed to have given Tuchel its full backing to continue in his role, despite calls from some for him to step down.

In a statement following the defeat, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said it was "heartbreaking to be so close."

"The players and Thomas gave it everything today and the squad, coaches and staff could not have worked harder during the tournament," he added.
