Donald Trump to Visit Ireland in September, Including Co Clare

US President Donald Trump is set to visit Ireland for at least two days in September.

The trip will include a visit to Co Clare, where he is expected to attend the Irish Open golf tournament at Trump International Golf Links and Hotel just outside the town of Doonbeg, the Press Association understands.

He is also expected to visit Dublin, but details on many elements of the engagement have yet to be finalised.

On his last visit to Ireland in 2023, Mr Trump was warmly welcomed to Doonbeg where locals waved American flags, and some donned the Make America Great Again cap.

But his last visit when he was in office in 2019 sparked protests from climate change, left-wing, pro-Palestine, pro-choice, anti-racism and anti-war activists, who flew the Trump baby blimp in Dublin.

The last visit of a sitting US President to Ireland was by Joe Biden in 2023 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr Biden visited Belfast, Dublin, Co Louth and Co Mayo, exploring his ancestral links to the former and declaring “Mayo for Sam”.

Ten of Mr Biden’s 16 great-great-grandparents are believed to hail from Ireland, and while he has links in Co Louth, those with Co Mayo associations are believed to be the strongest through the Blewitt family. He keeps in close contact with the Blewitt family, who attended the White House St Patrick’s Day receptions in 2022 and 2023.

The then-president was accompanied during the visit by former taoiseach Enda Kenny, who hails from Co Mayo, and his wife Fionnuala, as well as his son Hunter and sister Valerie Biden Owens, to a musical welcome from a harpist and fiddle player.

Mr Biden met historian Sinead McCoole, who showed him three artefacts from the Jackie Clarke Museum in Ballina, including the cockade which Theobald Wolfe Tone wore on his hat at the time of his capture by the British in 1798.

He also spoke to expert Brendan Walsh about the history of North Mayo, the Irish-American connections, and the background of the Blewitt family.
