Steinfeld said the pictures were so upsetting that Celeste Rivas' mother, Mercedes Martinez, cried during the entire hearing and never recovered from seeing the images. He also described one moment when Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman asked an LAPD detective what one of the photos showed. According to Steinfeld, the detective replied that it was Celeste's head. He claimed the condition of the remains was so severe that it was impossible to recognize them as a person's body.
