"We're back". Fever has exploded in New York for the NBA, and the temperature is rising further after the Knicks won Game 1 of the finals against the Spurs in San Antonio. Blue-orange flags on Fifth Avenue, the Empire State Building lit up with a theme, bars and restaurants organizing viewing parties, and a frantic rush for tickets to attend the finals: it has indeed been 27 years since 1999, the last time the Knicks were able to reach the finals, and a full 53 years since they last won the title.

Such is the immense anticipation that the spectacle now transcends the basketball court and the sporting performance. Madison Square Garden, "the Mecca of basketball" for players and fans, is at the center of this universe: thousands of supporters in the arena, hundreds of famous personalities courtside, sponsors ready to do anything to exploit this global media stage.

Some VIPs even traveled to the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio: Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, John Turturro, and Timothee Chalamet attended the Knicks' victory in Game 1. There will be many more at home. Pete Davidson, Emily Ratajkowski, Travis Scott, Zendaya, John McEnroe, Jessica Alba, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Alicia Keys generally do not miss their presence. The reason is also personal. Every finals game is broadcast in over 200 countries, with an audience exceeding 10 million. And the NBA's broadcast direction includes special attention: VIPs are filmed with a dedicated camera every time they interact.

Ticket prices in NY have skyrocketed: the minimum cost for a seat is currently around $3,500, with peaks over $40,000 for a "Suite Finals". To meet the demand, the administration has provided a series of giant screens: in Times Square, the existing screens will be dedicated to the Finals with amplified audio, but there are also equipped areas at Bryant Park, at Hudson Yards with pre-game events with DJs, at Brooklyn Bridge Park in Manhattan, and at Union Square.

The police fear that this "chaos" could create public order problems and have prepared special security measures. Madison Square Garden is already locked down with reinforced checks and staggered access. Public transport has been enhanced with increased frequencies of subways and buses in the pre and post-game hours.

The finals in New York are also a godsend for the NBA. In recent years, the finalist teams have represented small and medium-sized realities, the so-called "Small-town America." Denver Nuggets, Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, or the San Antonio Spurs themselves inevitably have less appeal for the public, and therefore for sponsors. New York, on the other hand, is the "Big Apple," one of the world's cultural capitals and an unattainable showcase for players, teams, sponsors, and VIPs.
