Por qué importa

A months-long war between the U.S. and Iran has seen over 400 U.S. troops wounded and a rising death toll, with a recent ceasefire collapsing.

At least one American service member was killed after the controlled detonation of an unexploded Iranian drone, according to U.S. Central Command.

A second service member was wounded during Saturday’s operation, military officials announced Sunday.

The U.S. military also recovered unidentified remains after a search for a missing service member in the wake of an earlier attack that killed two other service members on Friday. Those remains are believed to be those of a third service member killed in the strike.

Sunday’s announcement brings the U.S. death toll from the months-long war in Iran to at least 17 service members. More than 400 troops have been wounded throughout the campaign.

A tenuous ceasefire has effectively collapsed, risking an all-out assault and a revival of the months-long war. American forces launched a ninth consecutive night of strikes on Sunday as Iran ramps up missile and drone attacks on U.S. allies and assets in the Persian Gulf.

“Iran has been very, very badly damaged,” President Donald Trump told reporters Sunday evening.

“We hit them very hard again tonight, and we did that in honor of the probably three — it’s probably three, as opposed to two — great patriots,” he added.

The Trump administration mounted a new wave of strikes earlier this month after accusing Iran of attacking merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran then launched attacks at Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Syria and Jordan, warning of a “full-scale offensive” should U.S. attacks continue.

U.S. deaths include six service members who were killed after two refueling jets collided above Iraq earlier this year. An Iranian drone strike that hit a command post in Kuwait killed another six service members.

A Navy pilot died in a helicopter crash in the Arabian Sea earlier this month.

Trump, who was golfing at his Bedminster, New Jersey club on Saturday as Central Command announced the initial deaths, said news of Friday’s incident is a “very sad thing.”

“We hate to see it happen. It’s in service to our country,” he told News Nation.

A statement issued on behalf of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei said Trump’s signature on a memorandum of understanding was “worthless and invalid” and accused the U.S. of repeatedly breaching the commitments of the temporary peace deal.

He warned “unforgettable lessons” should U.S. strikes continue.

Trump told NewsNation on Saturday that he “couldn’t care less” about Iran abandoning the bilateral memorandum that was reached a month earlier.

“Godspeed, heroes,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wrote in a statement on X in response to news of the two service members on Saturday.

“Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,” he added.

U.S. Military Continues Strikes Against Iran in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Regional Conflict

The U.S. military continued its ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iranian military targets in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to degrade Tehran's ability to attack commercial shipping. This escalation, which has seen rising casualties on both sides and attacks on civilian infrastructure, has pushed oil prices up and raised fears of a full-scale war in the region.
