De Zerbi ready for relegation fight ‘until the last minute’ after Leeds frustrate Spurs

Tottenham two points ahead of 18th-placed West Ham‘We can’t forget what was the situation just 15 days ago’Roberto De Zerbi vowed that Tottenham will take their relegation battle to the wire after their hopes of staying up were dented by a frustrating 1-1 draw with Leeds. The north Londoners looked set to move four points clear of 18th-placed West Ham with two games to play after a brilliant goal from Mathys Tel set them on the path to a first home win in the league since 6 December. However Tel ruined a good night’s work when he gave away a penalty with a wild foul on Ethan Ampadu, allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to equalise from the spot. Continue reading...

Calvert-Lewin denies Spurs with Leeds equaliser to leave survival in balance

The story should have been about Mathys Tel deciding it was time to unfurl the brilliance that took the French forward to Bayern Munich when he was a teenager. Tottenham were closing in on survival when the 21-year-old broke the deadlock against Leeds United but Roberto De Zerbi has been in north London long enough to know nothing is straightforward when his team play at home.Disaster was on the way, Tel’s wild challenge on Ethan Ampadu allowing Dominic Calvert-Lewin to equalise from the spot. Tottenham, who have not won at home in the league since December, had missed the chance to move four points clear of 18th-placed West Ham with two games to play. It is likely that this shootout for survival with West Ham will come down to whether Tottenham can win when they host Everton on the final day. Continue reading...

Calvert-Lewin eases Leeds to verge of safety in dominant win over Burnley

It was the night all the nerves vanished into the ether, replaced by every track on the Leeds United soundtrack as Premier League survival was all but confirmed. It was all too easy to defeat rudderless and relegated Burnley, to put Leeds nine points clear of the relegation zone, with their rivals having four games remaining.Anton Stach’s smart shot started the festivities before Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin provided the headline act to move Leeds above Newcastle into 14th and extend the gap to 18th-placed Tottenham. The final half an hour at Elland Road was boisterous as the supporters celebrated a crucial victory in what will be a hard-fought journey to safety. Continue reading...

Premier League and FA Cup semi-finals: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Sánchez plays long game for McFarlane, Southampton can take heart, Arteta tries to gain edge and Isak will come good One moment from their FA Cup semi-final to Chelsea will haunt Leeds. When Tosin Adarabioyo stretched for a through ball and couldn’t quite get there, quarter of an hour in, everything seemed to slow down. There was Brenden Aaronson with just Robert Sánchez to beat, with the chance to put Leeds ahead against a side that hadn’t scored in five Premier League games and had seemingly lost all confidence. Even at the time it felt a huge moment. The US international didn’t do much wrong, but Sánchez made a fine save with his foot. That, it turned out, was the game. There were other opportunities – most notably Anton Stach’s drive that Sánchez saved spectacularly and the Dominic Calvert-Lewin header just after that, aimed straight at the keeper. They came after Chelsea had taken the lead and the emotional tone was set, though. Sometimes one chance can define a game. Manchester United's Lisandro Martinez loses appeal against three-game ban for hair pulling

The Football Association has upheld a three-game ban for Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez after rejecting the club's appeal against his red card for hair pulling during the 2-1 defeat by Leeds at Old Trafford. The independent regulatory commission stressed that hair pulling 'ought not to be tolerated' in football and should be discouraged through consistent punishment. Martinez, 28, will miss games against Brentford and Liverpool, while a Premier League panel voted 4:1 that the referee was correct to issue the red card.
