Researchers have found that infrasound—low-frequency vibrations below human hearing range—can trigger physiological stress responses that people may interpret as ghostly presences. A study with 36 participants showed significantly increased cortisol levels and feelings of irritation when exposed to infrasound, regardless of whether they could consciously detect it. The research builds on earlier work by Richard Wiseman and the late Vic Tandy, who proposed infrasound as an explanation for alleged hauntings in buildings with vibrating pipes, HVAC systems, or traffic rumbling.
