Steepest-ever increase driven by rising global energy prices amid West Asia conflict; domestic LPG rates unchanged

L'essentiel

  • Commercial LPG prices in India have surged to record levels with a Rs 993 increase per 19-kg cylinder — the steepest-ever hike.
  • The cylinder now costs Rs 3,071.50 in Delhi, up from Rs 2,078.50, representing a total three-month increase of Rs 1,303.

Pourquoi c'est important

Taille de police

Commercial LPG prices in India have reached a record high, with rates hiked by Rs 993 per 19-kg cylinder — the steepest-ever increase. This marks the third consecutive monthly hike, driven by rising global energy prices amid the ongoing West Asia conflict.

A 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder, primarily used by hotels and restaurants, now costs Rs 3,071.50 in Delhi, up from Rs 2,078.50 earlier. This follows previous hikes of Rs 195.50 per cylinder on April 1 and Rs 114.50 on March 1. In just three months, commercial LPG prices have risen by a total of Rs 1,303.

Global crude oil prices have surged nearly 50% following disruptions in energy supply chains due to the West Asia conflict. Indian Oil earlier said price revisions have been limited to select industrial segments, which account for a small share of total consumption and are adjusted monthly based on global rates.

Bulk and commercial LPG cylinders, which make up less than 1% of consumption, have seen a price hike. Bulk diesel and ATF for international airlines have also been revised upwards. At the same time, around 4% of petroleum products have seen a price cut, reflecting global market movements.

State-run oil companies — Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum — revise LPG and ATF prices on the first of every month based on international benchmarks and currency exchange rates.

In contrast, domestic LPG prices remain unchanged. The last revision was on March 7, when prices were increased by Rs 60 per 14.2-kg cylinder. A household LPG cylinder currently costs Rs 913 in Delhi.

Meanwhile, petrol and diesel prices continue to remain steady after a Rs 2 per litre cut in March last year. In Delhi, petrol is priced at Rs 94.72 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 87.62.

Commercial LPG prices in India have witnessed sharp fluctuations over the years, reflecting global energy trends and changes in subsidy policies. According to Indian Oil data, commercial LPG prices in Delhi were as low as Rs 831 in the year 2008 which dropped to 658.22 the next year. The prices of commercial LPG cylinders, which are revised every month, kept increasing since then.
