Pourquoi c'est important

India's Home Ministry has decided to include an indigenously developed anti-drone shield in its 'smart border security grid' to combat cross-border drone smuggling of narcotics and arms. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance border surveillance and security.

An anti-drone shield will be part of the ‘smart border security grid’ to check cross-border drone-smuggling of narcotics as well as arms and ammunition, as per a home ministry decision, sources said.

The anti-drone shield has been developed indigenously and will soon be deployed to check drones which have been used by ISI and drug traffickers, who more often than not work in tandem, to drop arms and drugs in the border areas, especially in Punjab.

The grid — which will also have the land port management system (LPMS) launched by home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday — will have sensors and smart fencing to enhance border security and surveillance, they said.

Launching LPMS — an integrated platform that will enable end-to-end digital workflows for cargo processing and passenger movement across all land ports — Shah said, “The LPMS system that takes every single stakeholder and data system on board, will in the coming days become a vital component of the envisioned ‘smart security grid’, and help ensure both economic as well as physical security.”

“It will increase synergy and information-sharing among the agencies,” Shah said, adding home ministry will implement the ‘smart border’ concept, and this, along with LPMS, will make borders impregnable.

LPMS would help reduce paperwork by 90%, cut waiting times for cargo trucks by 22-35% and constrict gate processing time by 40-60%, he said, adding that it will also boost tourism and raise trade volumes.
