Iran-US war latest: Tehran says it is closing Strait of Hormuz days after Trump deal due to ‘ceasefire violations’

Pakistan's interior minister also heads to Tehran for meetings on Iran-US talks as five killed in Lebanon in Israeli strikes

Iran has claimed that it will close the Strait of Hormuz to tankers, citing alleged violations of the ceasefire by the US and Israel, Tehran’s semi-official Mehr news agency is reporting.

The top joint military command, Khatam al-Anbiya Central ‌Headquarters, said that the closure was the "first step" in response to what it described as breaches of commitments.

It warned further measures would be taken if the “aggression” continued. Earlier on Saturday, five people were killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon.

US vide president JD Vance, however, has said there is not yet any evidence that Iran is closing the critical waterway, through which one fifth of the world’s oil supply typically flows.

It comes as Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff joins Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi for peace talks in Switzerland today.

The shuttling of Trump’s envoys signals that both sides intend to begin technical negotiations, after being initially cancelled, aimed at securing a permanent truce.

Trump reportedly told Israel to agree to a ceasefire with Hezbollah in Lebanon, amid reports that US intelligence is concerned about prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu undermining the US deal with Iran.

The US president instructed Israel to accept the ceasefire on Friday, he told NBC News in a call with a reporter, adding: "You just gotta calm down ‌sometimes and ‌use your head”.

Vance: No evidence Iran is closing Strait of Hormuz

We’ve just heard from US vice president JD Vance, who has responded to Iranian claims that they will close the Strait of Hormuz.

There is no evidence that such a closure is being carried out, Vance tells Fox News.

Tehran says it is closing the strait due to alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement agreed earlier this week.

Israeli strikes kill 10 in Lebanon after truce, with prospect of US-Iran talks unclear

Israeli strikes killed at least 10 people in Lebanon on Saturday, hours after a truce took effect, Israel saying it was reacting to attacks from Hezbollah and the Iran-backed group saying it would not allow Israel "freedom of movement" in Lebanon.

A halt to the fighting in Lebanon is a condition for starting 60 days of US-Iranian talks to resolve disputes over Iran’s nuclear program and other thorny issues key to forging a more durable deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and stabilise global oil supplies. It was not clear when those talks might get underway.

Poll shock for Trump as most Americans reject his handling of Iran

A new AP-NORC poll reveals that a significant majority of Americans continue to disapprove of Donald Trump's approach to Iran, even as his administration recently announced a deal with Tehran.

The survey, conducted as Trump pivoted from military threats to diplomatic overtures, underscores the deep unpopularity of the three-month conflict, with public sentiment remaining largely unchanged despite the recent agreement.

Approximately two-thirds, or 65%, of U.S. adults express disapproval of how Trump is managing issues with Iran. This widespread discontent, however, is sharply divided along partisan lines.

Obama says Trump’s Iran agreement may leave the US in worse situation than before

Former president Barack Obama warned that the agreement between the Trump administration and Iran that will bring the war to an end might leave the United States “worse off” than before.

The former president spoke to NBC’s Today Show co-host Craig Melvin at the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center and Library. Part of the center is dedicated to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear agreement brokered by his administration to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Trump’s first administration withdrew from that deal. But some conservatives have said that the current agreement resembles the 2015 Obama deal, also known as the JCPOA.

Israel would have been 'eviscerated' without US, says Trump

President Donald Trump has insisted his relationship with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still in tact despite weeks of reports of a rift.

“He will tell you, we’re the ones with the guns,” he said in an interview with Axios on Friday.

“We’re the ones with the whole deal. We’re the ones with the B2 Bombers etc.”

He added: “If it weren’t for Donald Trump, Israel would have been eviscerated.”
