SEOUL, June 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Ecuador held high-level policy consultations Friday, and discussed ways to expand cooperation in energy and defense amid the U.S.-Iran war, the foreign ministry said.
Choi Jun-ho, director-general for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs at the foreign ministry, met with Jose Rosemberg, Ecuador's undersecretary for Africa, Asia and Oceania, in Seoul, according to the ministry.
The two diplomats concurred on the view that the two nations have large potential for cooperation in the energy and resources sectors, citing the need to bolster energy security amid the Middle East war.
The two officials also exchanged views about ways to expand cooperation in the defense and public safety sectors.
During the meeting, Choi voiced hopes for greater defense cooperation, assessing the delivery of a South Korean 3,000-ton vessel to Ecuador as a symbol of the two nations' friendly ties.
South Korea revamped a decommissioned patrol ship and delivered it to the Ecuadorian Navy earlier this year to serve as a multipurpose warship.
