Prohibition on creating a habitat for birds within a 13km radius of the airport... Airport Facilities Act passed in plenary session

From now on, new bird habitat environments, including migratory bird habitats, cannot be created within a 13km radius of the airport, and the legal scope of bird collision prevention activities will be expanded from 8km to 13km.

People Power Party lawmaker Kim Do-eup (Gangseo, Busan) announced on the 20th that the partial amendment bill to the Airport Facilities Act, which he proposed with these contents, was passed at the plenary session of the National Assembly.

The current law stipulates that environments or facilities that can attract birds, such as bird sanctuaries, no-hunting areas, and food waste treatment plants, cannot be created within 8km of the airport marking point, but the revised law expanded this range to 13km.

According to data submitted by Rep. Kim's office from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, bird collisions (48%) accounted for nearly half of the causes of aviation safety problems last year, followed by breakdowns (19%), other causes (16%), and mid-air collisions (6%).

Rep. Kim said, “Through revision of this law, we must prepare fundamental prevention measures for bird collisions to ensure that a tragedy like the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster that occurred at Muan International Airport on December 29, 2024 never occurs again.”
