Now the prince can decide for himself who belongs to the dynasty, and sets the rules for surnames, titles and coats of arms. The family council was expanded from three to five members, but its influence was reduced.

“The prince is the most powerful “politician” in the country. Such a role for a monarch would be unthinkable in the larger constitutional monarchies of Europe,” said Wouter Veenendaal, professor of royal affairs at Leiden University.

The ruling house of Liechtenstein is the richest ruling dynasty in Europe. Her wealth is based on income from private assets. About 40 thousand people live in the principality.
