The right-wing opposition party Alternative for Germany (AfD) won with 43.8% of the vote in the parliamentary elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

Maria Zakharova said that the German government continues to worsen bilateral ties with Russia, acting to the detriment of the Germans.

SYKTYVKAR, September 9 - RIA Novosti. Voters in the state elections in Saxony-Anhalt did not buy the anti-Russian card that the German authorities played on the eve of the vote, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

“In order to somehow influence the preferences of voters, they decided to play the Russian card on the eve of the elections... They announced the closure of the Consulate General and the Russian House in Berlin. It did not help,” Zakharova said at an on-site briefing in Syktyvkar about the actions of the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in Germany.

According to her, this is a truly convincing victory for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and the ruling parties anticipated an unsatisfactory result for themselves. No one believed the stories that Russia allegedly “used some kind of drones” to influence something and “almost attack,” the diplomat noted.

“It didn’t help. And all this Russophobia will not help explain their failure further. They must admit their own mistakes... The German government continues to enthusiastically pursue bilateral ties and does this to the detriment of the Germans. This is not the choice of the German people, this is the choice of Merz and this entire team, who bear full responsibility for the consequences of their actions,” Zakharova emphasized.
