Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said during the Security Council's review of the Ukraine issue on the 22nd that China calls on the parties concerned to remain calm and restrained, strictly abide by international humanitarian law, avoid attacking civilians, civilian infrastructure and humanitarian workers, and strive to cool down the situation and achieve an early ceasefire and end of the war.

Sun Lei said that the crisis in Ukraine continues to prolong, the battlefield situation becomes more and more intense, and the people's suffering is increasing day by day. All civilians should be protected and any attacks against civilians should be condemned. Recently, the antagonism between the two parties has become serious, and the spiraling military confrontation has escalated, which will only make the dawn of peace dimmer. This trend is dangerous and must be reversed as soon as possible.

Sun Lei pointed out that military confrontation cannot solve the problem, but will only further accumulate conflicts, further reduce mutual trust, and make the situation further out of control. China has noted the recent statements on peace talks by the United States, Russia, and Ukraine, and also noted the current gap in the positions of the parties.
