Australian tennis player Kyrgios was temporarily suspended due to testing positive for cocaine use

Kyrgios, 31, underwent testing during his participation in the Mallorca Championship last June 22, before a laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed the presence of benzoyl ecgonine, a product of cocaine metabolism, in the sample.

According to the agency, cocaine is among the substances prohibited during competitions, and therefore the temporary suspension became mandatory, and has been in effect since August 4.

The Australian player has the right to appeal the decision, but he has not filed an appeal yet.

Kyrgios himself announced the incident, stressing that he had made a "serious mistake" and bears full responsibility. He also apologized to his fans, his family, and his sponsors, especially to the children who follow him.

The Australian star explained that the recent years had been difficult for him due to repeated injuries and their impact on his psychological state, noting that dealing with the possibility of the approaching end of his career was more difficult than he expected.

Although he stressed that these circumstances do not justify what he did, Kyrgios described the incident as a “warning bell,” announcing his departure from social media and public life for 28 days to focus on himself, before concluding his message by emphasizing his desire to return in a better way.

This crisis increases the difficulty of Kyrgios's situation on the field, after his competitive participation in 2026 was limited to only four matches, during which he achieved one victory, while his last match was in Mallorca against his compatriot Adam Walton.

Kyrgios's sporting future remains ambiguous, as no final punishment has yet been issued against him, while he still has the option of appealing the temporary suspension.
