PARIS, August 30 - RIA Novosti. Joining the European Union is not a natural outcome for any European democratic state, as was demonstrated at the referendum in Iceland, said Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally party faction in the French National Assembly.

A referendum on resuming EU accession negotiations took place in Iceland on Saturday. According to the latest data from the RUV television and radio company, the number of votes against resuming negotiations on joining the bloc exceeded 52%.

According to the head of the parliamentary faction of the National Rally, the vote in Iceland was a reminder that not only is a Europe based on strengthened federalism and the transfer of sovereignty to the European Commission possible, but also a Europe consisting of sovereign nations cooperating on issues of common interests.

Iceland applied to join the EU in 2009 following the global financial crisis. Negotiations were frozen in 2013 by the country's new government, including due to disagreements with Brussels over fisheries and agriculture.
