Eagles answer through Liam Baker

A

By Andrew McGarry

That's better from the "visitors".

A stoppage in the middle sees Harley Reid feed out a handball, another pass finds Liam Baker, and the former Tiger unloads a straight kick from 50 for West Coast's first goal of the game.

Eagles' Davis in concussion trouble after tackle

A

By Andrew McGarry

That was a tough minute or two for West Coast.

Paul Curtis tackled the Eagles' Hamish Davis in West Coast's defensive 50 and brought him to ground.

Unfortunately Davis's head hit the ground, and he is in trouble.

He was helped off, and will have to do a HIA - unless he is immediately ruled out.

Pretty soon after, the Kangaroos hoisted a ball to the square, and Nick Larkey marked and kicked a goal.

North has the start they want, and a 12-point lead.

We hope that Davis is ok.

It's a hot footy early on

A

By Andrew McGarry

The pressure is on early for those with the ball.

Liam Baker just produced a brilliant smother and regather on the wing to negate a possible Kangaroos break down the wing.

There's only been one goal so far, but it's a true contest.

Who can break this one open?

Miss from Charlie Spargo for North

A

By Andrew McGarry

The Kangaroos are on their game early, and they have just managed a second mark inside 50, with a chip to Charlie Spargo.

But Spargo's kick fades late for a point.

That's disappointing, but the Eagles will be desperate to stop the Kangaroos from getting these set shots - sooner or later they will be made to pay if they can't.

Jack Darling puts the Kangaroos in front

A

By Andrew McGarry

The Kangaroos reply, and we might have an early answer to that question on Reuben Ginbey.

North had it on the right wing, and a kick to the pocket was marked easily by Jack Darling.

The former West Coast forward nailed the kick, and he didn't mind a bit of a celebration against his old club!

The Kangaroos hit the front.

Harley Reid wastes an early chance for West Coast

A

By Andrew McGarry

Well, that was nearly a perfect start for West Coast.

The Eagles won a centre clearance, the ball went downfield, and Harley Reid was given a (slightly soft) free kick for a hold.

He kicked from 30 out - but completely shanked it!

The Eagles are on the board, but that should have been a goal within 45 seconds!

Se are underway in the west

A

By Andrew McGarry

We are underway in Perth Stadium.

Can the Kangaroos take advantage of the absence of West Coast key defender Reuben Ginbey?

Recent results between North Melbourne and West Coast

A

By Andrew McGarry

R3, 2026: West Coast by 17 (Perth Stadium)

R14, 2025: Nth Melbourne by 10 (Bunbury)

R23, 2024: West Coast by 5 (Bellerive Oval)

R14, 2024: Nth Melbourne by 9 (Perth Stadium)

R20, 2023: West Coast by 5 (Perth Stadium)

R1, 2023: Nth Melbourne by 5 (Docklands)

This matchup has been evenly-split, with both teams winning three out of the last six, and five out of the last 10.

The Kangaroos will be looking to keep up their recent good record in WA, with wins at Perth Stadium and Bunbury in two of their last three encounters in the west.

We could well be in for a close one, if recent history is any guide — the most one-sided of the last six games was a 17-point margin, while the other five were all decided by 10 points or less.

Teams are in for Kangaroos vs Eagles

A

By Andrew McGarry

There are no late changes for either side - and you can see the lineups above.

There could have been any number of changes for the Kangaroos after last week's hammering by Fremantle.

In the end, the selection panel has made two - aside from the injured Riley Hardeman, out come omitted pair Zac Fisher and Wil Dawson. In come Tom Blamires, Cooper Harvey and debutant Taylor Goad.

The 207cm ruck/defender from South Australia has spent three years in the VFL after being drafted by North in 2023.

The big injury list from last week's game has tipped West Coast's hand, with key trio Reuben Ginbey, Willem Duursma and Tom McCarthy all unavailable. Malakai Champion has been omitted from the side.

In come Tom Gross, Josh Lindsay, Elijah Hewett and debutant Marcus Herbert.

Herbert is a half-back/midfielder who was taken in the mid-season draft after being Geelong's VFL best-and-fairest in 2025.

It's time for North Melbourne vs West Coast

A

By Andrew McGarry

Well, that wraps things up for game one of three of Saturday footy.

Next up we head west to Perth Stadium, with North Melbourne taking on West Coast in a "home" game.

The Kangaroos will be desperate to bounce back after last week's shellacking from Fremantle in Bunbury.

And the Eagles would love another win to move a little bit closer to an unlikely spot in the wild card spots.

Melbourne defender Jake Lever's still got it

A

By Andrew McGarry

Even with the game well decided late in the fourth quarter, Dees defender Jake Lever was not giving a thing away, providing a great smother to stifle an Essendon attack.

And he didn't mind a few high fives afterwards.

FT: Melbourne 13.17 (95) beats Essendon 6.14 (50)

A

By Andrew McGarry

The siren sounds, the game is over and the Demons run out comfortable winners at the MCG.

A three-goal to none final term extends the margin to 45 points, and Melbourne seals a ninth win of the season.

That puts the Demons in the top four - for now at least - and Steven King's men will be happy enough with the performance today after being challenged in the second half.

It's a disappointing day for the Bombers after a solid effort. The biggest disappointment is the shoulder injury to Archie Roberts.

He will be a big absence for Essendon going forward - you suspect he will be out for a while.

Well done to the 41,438 fans at the MCG for giving the late Neale Daniher a minute's applause in the sixth minute of play to match his number six guernsey in the tribute game between his two sides.

Melksham grabs another goal as Demons kick away

A

By Andrew McGarry

The Bombers are fading a little, it seems, after making such a concerted effort to get back in the game.

The gaps are opening up, and Jake Melksham takes another mark in forward 50 and kicks the Dees' 13th of the day.

Another goal as Demons look home

A

By Andrew McGarry

Kade Chandler has benefited from a somewhat soft free kick, but he's taken advantage and kicked one from the pocket.

The lead is 40 points, and that should be enough, surely, for the Demons.

Jake Melksham kicks a vital goal for Melbourne

A

By Andrew McGarry

The error count is mounting as the rain falls.

Essendon intercepted a poor kick inside forward 50, but the kick couldn't find a man.

The Demons broke forward, and eventually it ended with Jake Melksham kicking a vital goal for Melbourne.

The lead is back out to 34 points, and although there is still 13 minutes on the clock, that would have to be close to a winning margin.

Poster for the Demons

A

By Andrew McGarry

That was nearly a payback for Essendon's misses.

Sam Durham got caught holding the ball after pulling it in on the ground.

They went long to a contest, the ball came out to Bayley Fritsch, who scooped it up in the wet but his kick on the run hit the post.

Open Questions

  • Will Hamish Davis be cleared to play after his HIA?
  • How will the Kangaroos' team changes impact their performance?
  • What is the extent of Archie Roberts' shoulder injury?
