Mehmet Polat, a 41-year-old father of one living in Sarıyer district of Istanbul, applied to Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital with complaints such as persistent cough and weight loss.

When no results were obtained with bronchoscopy and tests, VATS (Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery), which is a closed surgery method performed through small incisions with the help of a camera and special tools, was applied by the decision of the council.

In the operation on July 7, it was determined by rapid pathology at the time of surgery that the patient did not have cancer.

While it was understood that the cause of the patient's complaints was bone, the bone and surrounding tissue were removed.

Assoc. Dr. Onur Derdiyok gave information about his patient's condition and the operation.

Derdiyok stated that people should not neglect their persistent complaints and gave important warnings to citizens.

On the other hand, the difference between the patient's lung condition before and after surgery attracted attention.

Explaining his experiences, 41-year-old Mehmet Polat said, "I applied to the hospital due to cough, weakness and excessive weight loss.

Frankly, I thought it was a mass, it was bothering me a lot, I had extreme weight loss.

I am someone who loves bones, and I think it is normal to have it.

It didn't surprise me that the bone came out, but from now on I'll have a hard time eating.

In case of discomfort, they should apply to the nearest hospital units.

"BONE TISSUE COMPATIBLE, ABOUT HALF A CENTIM"

Providing information about his patient's condition, Assoc. Dr. Onur Derdiyok said, "Our patient is a 41-year-old male who has been smoking for a long time.

Sudden weight loss; In about 2 weeks, he gained about 7 kilos, had fever, and signs of infection.

Radiological imaging was performed, a lesion was detected in his right lung, and medical treatment was started.

Afterwards, there was a decrease in infection parameters, but no radiological decrease occurred.

That's why we first performed a procedure called bronchoscopy.

We took a piece of the lung from that suspicious area.

Since we suspected cancer, PET procedures were performed because there was still tissue there.

By council decision, surgery was decided.

The vascular structures were separated one by one and the bronchial section was opened. We removed the suspected part and saw that it was granulation tissue caused by a foreign body.

This part was cut from the bronchus, repaired again, and the surgery was completed in a closed manner.

A half-centimeter lesion with compatible bone tissue was found.

The patient was a smoker, had sudden weight loss, had a persistent cough that had been going on for about 1 month, and radiologically the patient was compatible with cancer, but as a result of examinations in advanced centers such as Şişli Etfal, a foreign body was also considered in the differential diagnosis.

That's why the procedure we call bronchoscopy was first performed," he said.

Continuing his words by saying, 'Our patient is fine now, all his complaints have disappeared, he has started to gain weight,' Derdiyok said, "Sometimes a foreign name can remain for years.

I can say that swallowing is not very soon because we estimate that it will take approximately 3-6 months for the tissue related to it to form.

In cases such as persistent or persistent cough, intermittent fever, and weight loss, we should contact health institutions as soon as possible.

After the bone tissue is removed; I learned that we had a patient who liked to eat bones.

Most likely, one of those tissues got into his lungs during the eating process.

Not every nodule or lesion we see in the lung is cancer; differential diagnoses are very important.

If this patient came at a later time, we might even have to remove his entire lung.

Findings such as infection and sepsis may occur.

"With our early intervention, the patient had a normal surgery with no lung loss," he said.

"THE OPERATION LAST ABOUT 2 HOURS, IT IS A VERY RARE SURGERY"

Derdiyok said, "The operation lasted about 2 hours.

It is a very rare surgery, a foreign body entering the lung is not a rare event, but sleeve surgeries due to foreign bodies are not frequently encountered in the literature.

When there was a foreign object, the middle part was not ventilated, resulting in a very opaque image.

"After we removed that part, the middle part started to take off and that opaque part is no longer there," he said.
