Bombay High Court Allows Withdrawal of Petition Challenging Sir Ratan Tata Trust's Structure

The Bombay High Court allowed the withdrawal of a petition challenging the life trustee structure of Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT) due to the petitioner’s lack of standing. The petition, filed by Suresh Tulsiram Patilkhede, argued that SRTT’s board composition violated the Maharashtra Public Trust (Second Amendment) Act, 2025, which caps life trustees at 25% of the total board. SRTT currently has three life trustees out of six members, exceeding the limit. The court’s decision does not resolve the underlying issue, and SRTT may need to restructure to comply with the law. A scheduled SRTT meeting on May 16 will reconsider the trust’s representation on Tata Sons’ board, where SRTT holds 23.56% equity.
