Borussia Mönchengladbach: Coach Polanski under pressure after defeat against Elversberg

Eugen Polanski didn't even beat around the bush. “For us the game not only feels like shit, but it was also shit in the end,” said the coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach after the 3:4 (2:1) against newly promoted SV Elversberg.

After the opening defeat at RB Leipzig (0:3), Gladbach is still pointless - and the air is getting thin for the coach after two match days. “If you don’t win games, you’re basically under pressure,” said Borussia sports director Rouven Schröder on Saturday.

Against the league debutants, Gladbach showed an improvement offensively and led comfortably 3-1 after 56 minutes, but then the team fell apart. “After a 3-1 lead, you can’t lose. That’s clear,” said Schröder.

When there were no results at the start of the preseason in Gladbach, Gerardo Seoane had to leave early - after three match days. The then U23 coach Polanski initially took over on an interim basis and later received a contract until 2028.

But after a rather weak season with 38 points and twelfth place, there was already a “controversial discussion” about the ex-professional’s continued employment in the summer, as Schröder admitted at the time. The club decided in favor of Polanski, but against “business as usual”. The coach was allowed to stay, but the assistant coaching team was reorganized and the squad changed.

This means that Polanski's excuses have become fewer. While last year he was able to point out that he had taken over the team during the season, this time he completed the entire preparation and was able to make the processes more effective. That's why we're taking a closer look now.

«It's normal that we wanted to create a spirit of optimism. “But that didn’t work out after two games,” summarized Schröder. However, he did not want to open a coaching discussion on Saturday.

“It’s important to stay clear and not leave everything in ruins after two match days,” said the 50-year-old. But Schröder also made it clear: “We have to speak clearly to each other at this early point in the season.”
